Jaffa 1900:

The Jaffa orange, also Shamouti orange, is a sweet, almost seedless orange variety. Originally developed by Arab farmers in Palestine in the mid-19th century, it takes its name from the city of Jaffa where it was first produced for export.[1][2] It became a primary citrus export of the State of Israel following its establishment in 1948
History
In Palestine
Located at the crossroads between Africa, western Asia, and Europe, Palestine produced a number of commodities for export via imperial and global distribution networks throughout the late Islamic period (1200-1900 CE). Among these were soap, sugar, barley, oranges, and cotton. Though cotton left its mark throughout the region, the only commodity, "that remains a symbol of production in Palestine is the Jaffa orange."[6]
The Jaffa orange was a new variety developed by Arab farmers after emerging in mid-19th century Palestine as a mutation on a tree of the Baladi variety near Jaffa.[1][2] While the sour orange (C. Aurantium) was brought westward from China and India by Arab traders, who probably introduced it to Sicily and Spain, the Jaffa orange was developed from the sweet orange (C. sinensis) which was brought from China to the Mediterranean region by Vasco de Gama, the Portuguese explorer, in 1498.[2]
After the Crimean War (1853–56), the most important innovation in Palestinian agriculture was the rapid expansion in citrus cultivation.[4] Foremost among the varieties cultivated was the Jaffa orange, and mention of it being exported to Europe first appears in British consular reports in the 1850s.[4][1] One factor cited in the growth of the export market was the development of steam ships in the first half of the 19th century. Their arrival in the Port of Jaffa enabled the export of oranges to the European markets in days rather than weeks.[7] Another reason cited for the increased concentration on the production of Jaffa oranges was the relative lack of European control over the cultivation of this crop, as compared to the cultivation of cotton; while the latter had been the primary commodity crop of Palestine, it was soon outpaced by the Jaffa orange.[8]
Exports grew from 200,000 oranges in 1845 to 38 million oranges by 1870.[7] The citrus plantations of this time were primarily owned by wealthy Arab merchants and notables, rather than small farmers, as the fruits required large capital investments with no yield for several years.[4][9] An 1872 account of Jaffa by a European traveller notes that, "Surrounding Jaffa are the orange gardens for which it is justly extolled, and which are a considerable source of wealth to the owners.
..an in-depth study of the financial expenditure involved reveals that they were ultimately more cost-efficient than the Zionist-European enterprises that followed them some two decades later.[9]
..In the 1950s and 1960s, Jaffa oranges became emblems of the Israeli state.

The protest in 1936 was known by the Palestinian Arab Revolt of 1936 (thaoret 36) against the British. The term uprising "intifada" was first used in 1987 against the Israeli occupation.

It was a rainy Sunday noon sometime between Feb./March 1948. I was at home with my parents when suddenly we heard a terrific explosion which could be heard 3 kms. around. Soon we knew that the Grand Saraya bldg. is lying on the ground with 20 persons killed + the injured. A truck full of explosives was stationed in the alley alongside the Saraya and so it was. It occurs to one's mind that in 1948, using the procedure of trapped vehicles to kill and destroy is somewhat a novelty in comparison to nowadays........

I did personally watch the exodus of Jaffa families from the Jaffa Port, from one of our family's house windows overlooking the Greek Orthodox Convent and the Port....They used to pack themselves in automated and hand-rowed small ( launchers & flokas ) to move outside the Port Inner Basin to reach larger ships outside the Basin....
I will never forget that horrible scene of people being forced to leave their homeland to be robbed and occupied by gangsters imported from the four corners of the world...

With all my respect to the work Dr. Paul Erhlich (1854-1915) devoted to the field of science and to mankind, it would have been much nicer to name another street in his name, than to replace the name of Dr. Fouad Dajani's (1890-1940) Street, who also devoted his life to mankind.

Hello i was born in 1964 in Dajani hospital, although the zionists called it Tsahalon, people called streets ,neighbourhoods and places by the original Arabic names, for many years, until about the 1970's. i am a jew,and ashamed of the Nakba, my grandparents on my maternal side arrived in Palestine in 1934 and 1935, when the Zionists conquered Jaffa, they were instructed to invade the Arab's property, they were living in Tel Aviv, and didn't need to move to Jaffa, it was a trick by the Zionists, It is very good that you remember and don't forget, inchallah, you will be able to return,or at least,if you want ,to get back what belongs to you, keep all the records , certificates, documents and whatever you have, tell your children and grandchildren what has happened,
Regards,
Avi W.

Fantomet:
Fantomets Wikipedia-artikkel:
The first fruits to carry the "Jaffa orange" label were marketed by the farmers of Sarona, a German Templer colony established in 1871.[citation needed] In the 1880s, an American grower, H.S. Sanford, tried to cultivate the Jaffa orange in Florida.[10]
Packing oranges in Petah Tikva, 1938
Jewish immigrants to Palestine adopted the Jaffa orange variety from Arab farmers.[1] According to the Hope Simpson Royal Commission Report of 1930,
"The cultivation of the orange, introduced by the Arabs before the commencement of Jewish settlement, has developed to a very great extent in consequence of that settlement. There is no doubt that the pitch of perfection to which the technique of plantation and cultivation of the orange and grape-fruit have been brought in Palestine is due to the scientific methods of the Jewish agriculturist."[11]
Partnerships in growing and exporting these oranges was an example of Arab-Jewish cooperation despite rising political tensions.[12] By 1939, Jewish and Arab orange orchards in Palestine covered 75,000 acres (300 km2), employed over 100,000 workers, and their produce was a primary export. During World War II (1939–1945) citrus-growing declined, but recovered after the war with the vigorous assistance of the British Mandate authorities.
Fritz Nilsen: "En ”ørken”? i Folk uten land (s. 23-24):
Quote:
I 1894 påpåpekte geografen Sir George Adam Smith:
Her er hva Smith skrev, i utdrag:
If Palestine is not a land of forests, it is a land of orchards. … Innumerable hillsides, not capable of other cultivation, which were terraced with vineyards to their summits, now in their ruin only exaggerate the stoniness of the land. But some Germans … and the Jewish Colonies are changing this… There is no turf in Palestine and little grass that lasts through summer … To a western eye it [The Holy Land] must, at certain seasons, seem meager and uninfluential. … It is not, however, the western eye we have to consider. It is the effect of this fertility on the desert nomads from whom the population of Syria was chiefly drawn.. If even at the season of its annual ebb the fertility of the whole land afford a contrast to the dessert. … This fertility affected immigrants from the desert, among whom were Israel,. …-.
